Wood Carvings

The Haida usually carve red and yellow cedar. They also carve yew, alder, boxwood and sometimes spruce wood. They make large cedar canoes, monumental cedar totems, paddles, talking sticks, rattles, masks, jewellery, walking sticks, bowls, spoons, fish clubs, halibut and fish hooks, bent wood drums, boxes and drum hoops all from wood. The Haida build their longhouse style homes out of cedar. Wood is a very important part of the Haida culture. Most of the wood is decorated with carving and painted Haida designs.
